HD Football 720P - 1080i

Hello Folks,
Anyone of you done, say HD football in both formats. Having the luxury of being home on Sundays watching the NFL, I notice the interlace vs. progressive issues. Mainly tight shots with a player running/jogging back to the huddle. With the 1080i network the background becomes rectanglular blocks, but I do not see this on the other two I know broad/cablecast in 720p.
My question is, is that something noticable in the truck or is it further down the transmission line? Or even my LCD HDTV vs. a crt set? Just wondering if you have worked a game & saw a hd replay, noticing a big difference at home vs. on-site? I am sure there is a difference, just wondering is it big and how much better is 720P vs. 1080i for sports.
Thanks for your replies.
