We will once again be using NEP SS-10 for three games this weekend, and I need someone who can switch on the Phillips DD-35. The dates are 5/26-28, three days of baseball. Please email me if you are available. Thanks.

That would be the one and only Mark "Herky" Herklotz. Joe Abbenda will be doing the Fox "B" show. ...and I will be doing studio work in LA (which pays better and I sleep in my own bed) :-)

So who's doing Monday nights then? Is it Joe Abbenda? John, do you know? Sean Kelly

Mike, I forgot that the DD-35 was in more ABC trucks than just the Monday Night Football truck. Which, NEP replaced with a Kalypso in SS-26. Trying to do anything than MNF in that truck is interesting, it was clearly designed for just one show. Just enough upconverters, tape decks only spec'd for MNF, etc... Though NEP has made good efforts in making it a more universal truck. LD
I am curious though, maybe a crewer can enlighten me. What do they do when they have one of these switchers that only a handful of people know, and even fewer are actually good at?
The crewer usually panics, the truck company then gets involved and a mass e-mail gets sent. About four years back NMT replaced me from a baseball series, found a another TD and paid for him to come here so I could go somewhere and switch a relatively simple corporate event on a DD-35.
For mobile truck companies...unless the Philips is client specific (contracted, requested, etc...) wouldn't they be better off with a used 4k instead of a DD-35 that maybe five people in the US and Canada can run well?
Lou, unless I really wrong, this specific truck was one of the ABC trucks that NMT bought and then sold to NEP. I believe that ABC still uses the truck and they like the DD. Of course, a Kalypso does make more sense if the truck gets a lot of outside rental. After looking at NEP's site, I am glad I am not on that show. You NEED to use the B unit with that truck. Sounds like a fun set and strike for that crew.

John: It sounds to me like you are "fishing" here. I would offer that you (and all of us) already know the "way forward" - a properly designed new switcher would have to be developed by a team of expert users who understand all of the current brands and who know why (as you put it) "a DD can do things easier" and can incorporate that into the next design without bagging everyone else who doesn't understand the DD's, or the Kalypso, or the SONY. You won't get that if your product is designed by salesmen, managers, or marketeers - that's when you get your "clones", or something that "sells well" to the people who write the checks, but does little to actually help the end user whose rear end is on the line during every show. I think that one company was on the right track for a while, but they have consciously chosen to throw away that edge and go a different route. I think that I can safely tell you that you and the rest of us will be seeing your "way forward" product sooner than you expect, but no longer from whom you'd expect.

I am curious though, maybe a crewer can enlighten me. What do they do when they have one of these switchers that only a handful of people know, and even fewer are actually good at? At what point is it better to just cut the show on a router? It seems this past winter we've had a lot of requests for last minute...need you this weekend...TDs? I guess I should TiVO these shows to get an idea. For mobile truck companies...unless the Philips is client specific (contracted, requested, etc...) wouldn't they be better off with a used 4k instead of a DD-35 that maybe five people in the US and Canada can run well?
