I have an opportunity to do two shows in NYC this year. They are not sporting events; they are banquets. I dont have much info about what the format of the show is but the crewer will pay for a hotel room and reimburse me for milage. This will be my first GIG in NYC

My question to the group is how much should I charge for my services ? I"ll be cutting the show in Gamecreek's Olympic truck , Grass 4000 Switcher, A-51 DVE, Fast forward for DDR ? 2 channel.

My other conerns are, I dont do much freelancing I switch network studio shows. What will be expected of me when I get in the truck ? I know the basics get the monitor wall set for the director, faxing all the equipment, building effects. What about interacting with the crew ? what will they, the director or tech magager expect of me ?
My question to the group is how much should I charge for my services ?
Based on the factors you've described, I recommend you ask for $750 for 10 ? in the event they decline your first request counter with $700 but don't go lower than $600. It's always easier to come down in rate than go up so you might as well start high. That's my $.02 for what it's worth. Good luck.

Say a screen craps out on you, they are the first responders, if you will. Some directors are more hands-on than others when it comes to tech issues, so you may have to feel your way through that. I'd also ask the tech manger directly what he/she expects of me crew-wise; I've done freelance stuff for NBC where I had to play Timesheet Police, so watch out for that, too.
NYC rates: National cable news like CNBC/MSNBC: somewhere around $400/8 hour shift Sports: anywhere from $425-$600/10 hour shift, depending on the client. Banquet?? No idea. But if the client is a big company, don't get ripped off. You should feel comfortable asking for $500/10 from say, Bank of America, or comparable corporation. That might even be low, I wouldn't know. This wouldn't be Dec. 3rd and 4th, would it? And if there's any NY TDs reading this and thinking the numbers are high, you're getting ripped off. If you think the numbers are low, then tell me, dammit, because I'm getting ripped off!
As a NY TD, I'd say some of those rates are low. The news rates are about right, but I know for a fact that there are freelance camera operators in NYC getting $600 at least for sports and corporate stuff, so a TD should get a bit more than that.

That sounds like the NASCAR awards dinner/show. There should also be a network feed truck. Sounds like they want you to do the in house screens. You probably would be getting feeds from the BIG truck and maybe giving a few.

Guys, Thanks for your responses. The Client is Nascar Images. The shows are November 30th and December 1st. At the Waldorf Historia. I've asked for more info as to what I'll be doing exactly.

hell, i was telling you AND Curt that! to be honest, I was overpaid at the time I was there. Plus, it was $375, but I adjusted for inflation cuz I haven't done a freelance shift there in over 2 years.

Being a corporate event, will they expect you to direct and TD? Being asked to direct always affects my rate.

The last corporate "event" I did the rate was NICE. The hours were long but they paid the per diem up front in cash. The rate was "north" of what Eric mentioned.

How long is the show? Will you need to cut monitor or other ISO feeds? Driving in NYC can be tricky. Parking rather expensive. Any way for you to take a train and have them pay for that? Olympic has a DVEous as it's main DVE, the A-51 is used for clocks.
