I went back and reviewed my notes on this procedure. The 345 is not required for this step. It is used in the 308 transition multiplier alignment which is a similar ramp ajustment. What is important to adjust your linier keys is that you have a linier ramp no chroma for your key signal that is exactly 714mV. It would also be a good idea to make sure your termination is 75 ohms. Most key signals do not use setup, so unless you have a box such as a Dubner that puts out setup on the key, turn off setup on your ramp signal for this adjustment. Using the 382 Personality card you assign the key input with the ramp signal to the background crosspoint. You need to verify that the Background generator is set to white (714mV). With black on the A BKGD bus and White background on the key bus (VK and Key A), select a title transition and cut it on air. Turn off the lum key button to select a linier key. Now you should see a linier ramp from black to white. Adjust the offset and gain pots on the 350 so the ramp just touchs at the top and bottom. You should have enough range on the Gain pot to dip below the white level and bring it up so it just touches. Somtimes the range of the gain pot has to be changed to get enough range. If I remember correctly it gets increased to 5K. If it is adjusted correctly the video is black when the key is low and white when the key is high, with a liner transition in between. Cut the Title key off air and cut the Video Key on air with a linier key selected to repeat for the Video Key. Repeat for other M/Es. I hope this clears up the confusion. Just as a note of caution, Linier keys are usually aligned after DCs, Gains are done on the video path and the 362 Background generator has been aligned. Vern
You are correct. The Model 300 does not support unshaped keys. To do the Linier Key Adjustment requires a ramp signal with no chroma or setup on it that is exactly 714mv to use as a key signal. You also need a 371 Ramp generator. Assign the key signal to the background input. Select black on the A Bkgd busor PGM bus of the bank you wish to adjust, and select the Background input on the key bus (Title or VK). Set the Background to 100 IRE no chroma white signal. Put the 371 Ramp generator in the 345 slot for that ME. On the front of the 350-50/60 there are offset and gain pots for both the Title (R334 & R333) and VK (R294 & R293). They are labled with silk screen on the board. Set the offset pot so the ramp just touchs the black level. Set the Gain pot so the ramp just touches the white level. Repeat for all keyers. Replacing the 345 card when done. -Vern
Interesting. I'm assuming that the key signal reacts with the ramp signal to "contour" the fill video? Is there an explanation that I would understand? I wish I smart enough to understand the math involved in the digital realm. Photoshop is still lacking a proper way to unshape. I and others have workarounds, but they are not perfect and are rather brute-force. I would like to write the Photoshop plugin that would do the magic and make millions. :)
I'm not 100% certain but I would bet big money that the 300 does not have an option to set shape/unshape for key signals. I don't believe this was a thuoght with the older CG/s and switchers. -Clint
Proper unshaping is a procedure that requires a exact pixel to pixel correspondance between the matte and fill signals. There's some math that's done there, and that's not something you'll find in the analog world. I once attempted to unshape an analog key using my Kaleidoscope's unshape feature. (and only once) It wasn't a pretty sight. I did have a friend once call me about a premultiplied key from a Chyron going into an Ampex AVC switcher. All of the super designs had white transparent elements that just turned grey when keyed. They tried buying and installing some third party boards into the AVC switcher that were supposed to fix the problem. My friend didn't really notice much difference. Grass Valley knew about the Shaped-Unshaped video problem a long time ago and had solutions that worked around the problem around 20 years ago. Why Chyron never provided an Unshaped video output with the Infinit, I'll never know.

It is indeed a 300-2. We do have a 3000 sitting in storage but we can't use it until we install more inputs. I know the 300 is old, and I can't know for sure if it would support unshaping because I don't have a brochure or the setup/engineering manuals. There is a user manual, but that is so basic it makes me think it would probably skip over such a feature. I can only hope that anyone bothering to implement a linear key, even back then, would also support unshaping. I don't see why that couldn't have existed in an analog switcher, but then I'm not familiar with what titling options existed back then. Unfortunately our CG won't do nonshaped output, and I'm hoping we're not stuck with the possibility that it's simply not possible to properly key it because the switcher is just that old.
Honsvick, I'm not the original poster, but if you have the paper manuals, could you post the procedure for setting video shaping/unshaping on the linear keyers?
The Grass 300 was an analog switcher. I don't believe there was ever a feature for unshaping a key. I know that devices like the Dubner CG and Kaleidoscope could output unshaped video to the board. It wasn't until I got into a digital switcher did I find an unshape feature. (GVG 1000) Perhaps you were asking about a GVG 3000 or 4000? I don't know anything about those.

I used to be a Grass Valley Field Service Engineer. I probably still have all the paper manuals. What do you need to know?

I once saw someone offering PDFs of the manual ... I think it was on editsuite. Try searching the archives.

Electronic manuals were still in the labs, and only a pipe dream to directors and TDs. You may find someone selling the 3-ring binders of info on Ebay.
