Crazy Sony 8K Keyer Quirk!?

Here's the scenario...

On PGM/PST, you have a source online (a camera) and KEY 1 (a graphics source) is ON. A fullscreen graphic animates on-screen, covering up the camera. Now, you want to dissolve -- clean -- to another source, we'll say a video server port. So, you preset the next source, delegate BKGD + KEY 1 and pull the fader bar or press AUTO TRANS. Well, not so fast my friend! During the transition I see a flash of what was originally on PGM, in this case a camera, as if the KEY is going from 100% to 0% and back to 100% during the transition.

If you take the above scenario a bit further and say after that graphic animates on-screen on PGM/PST, you have an upstream effect to transition from that fullscreen element to another source... you have to leave the downstream key on, underdissolve to your upstream M/E, then lose the downstream key, and then run your transition!

I'm hearing this is a quirk on the Sony, but I if true I'm blown away.

Thoughts? Insights?

Thanks,
Christian

I just came from a few days on an 8000 and I tried to duplicate the problem that you have described. I was unable to cause a flash of PGM when doing a BKGD/KEY transition (which leads me to wonder if the graphics source isn't somehow dropping out the key signal momentarily). I HAVE seen a known "quirk" on the 8000 when doing a combination transition in that the key rate & transparency are different than the background transition - I suspect that this MAY have something to do with when the M/E is in Multi-Program / Independent Transition mode, as my tests these past few days (where I saw nothing wrong) were done with an M/E that was in Standard mode, running 5.2 software.

It looks like the 8k is keying the DSK downstream from the mix circuitry, so a BKGD + Key1 delegated transition is internally no different than hitting Auto Trans and Key Auto at the same time. Try doing a wipe with BKGD + Key1 delegated and see if the DSK wipes off properly or if it mixes while the background wipes underneath. Here is my workaround: If the key is 100% fullscreen when you want to do the dissolve, just undercut your next source and use Key Auto to dissolve the key off, revealing the next source. It looks just like a dissolve.
