Just wondering why I struggle so much trying to (box / sep edge) mask something on a Kalypso.
I find myself turning the knobs for what seems to be forever...sometimes never finding the the source at all. I know this a TD 101 question but its driving me crazy. It's so easy on the GV 3/4k's.
Of course, a Mask Dim would have been helpful, but I doubt that you'll ever see it.
yet another feature the 4K had. I also felt an idiot trying to put a mask on keyers on a Kalypso, where a 4K is very easy. I guess ideally before you build any emems, build your first emem with mask in a good position, and then turn it off. Then when you turn it on the positioning will be where you can see it.
When you first turn on a mask in the Kalypso it is typically off screen. Before you touch anything, go to the switcher panel, mask section and rotate the size knob, I believe clockwise. The mask should appear. Then you can adjust sides and softness separately. The reasons that you feel like you're twisting knobs forever is because (1) the knobs are not all intuitive...meaning that a clockwise turn should move the top or bottom part of the mask down, and a clockwise turn in eithter Left or Right should move the mask to the right (Clockwise = down or right, Counter-Clockwise = up or left). That's not how it was actually implemented. (2) if do DO turn the knobs the wrong way, they just keep going & there's no "beep" to tell you that you've reached the limits. What you can do is to go into the Wipie Menu, and delegate the BOX wipe to the keyer (meaning the dedicated shutterbox pattern). This is the same pattern as the mask. Now you can use the menu knobs to get values to your knob inputs - this'll help you to understand exactly where the mask is at. Of course, a Mask Dim would have been helpful, but I doubt that you'll ever see it.
