Hey guys -- I'm one of the (un)fortunate TDs that will be switching for the Big Ten Network this fall. I was wondering who else around here has cut sports on the Kayak. Luckily, we have a Kayak at my home station but I've never done anything as extensive as sports with it. I'm a relatively green TD when it comes to sports, I've only switched about 6 or 7 events on 3K/4Ks and Kalypsos. Anyway, I'd love to hear how you've been doing things on the Kayak. Do you go with DD mode or GVG mode? Seems that GVG mode might be best since I'm use to switching sports with the Kalypso... but I'm also comfortable making macros for everything under the sun at my station. Also, I was wondering if there are any kind-hearted Kayak TDs out there who would be willing to share a set up configuration... I know I'm probably pushing my luck asking and I don't mean to offend anybody, I know setup is part of the craft... but it doesn't hurt to ask... thanks for the help!

Hello, Just to put my two cents in, I broke in hdxs17 and was just with Dale on 19 yesterday. Using other peoples set ups on the Kayak won't work. In fact using your own setups on two different Kayaks won't work unless the trucks are wired the exact same way. Because the macros and are looking for input numbers not buttons. So if your tele is on FS7 on 17 and FS4 on 19 the set up is invalid. Have Fun Greg

Not to hijack this thread, but does anyone else find it annoying when you walk in to do a show and everybody says "so and so was here last time and he left it all set up for you." You look down and there's macros, bus links, ME's in Prog CF, etc. When I tell them they're going to have to go through everything with me so I can build my own setup they always get this weird look, they think that I think I'm too good for their guy and want to do everything myself because their guy is not good enough for me. I'm sure I'm not the only one to ever walk into this situation but it's always frustrating when you start off by them thinking you're stuck up. I get shivers when looking at somebody else's setup. I'm afraid to hit a button because all kinds of stuff is going to start flying, cueing and triggering. It's like walking into a minefield as far as I'm concerned. If I were you PSU442, I'd try to get some extra time on my first show and build my setup from scratch. Then you can save it and improve it every show from there on. That's really the only way to know where the bodies (and land mines) are buried. I'd be glad to give you mine but I don't speak Kayak and even if I did I rarely save my setups.

No offense, but if we're asking to borrow set-ups should we really be switching on these things? The last thing in the world I would want is someone else's setup. What happens that first time you're painted into a corner, and if you didn't set it up how can you expect to know what's gone wrong. I'm just very leery of this Big Ten Network from them asking $1.10 per subscriber on BASIC cable, to their deal with Mountain Mobile, to having a Kayak be the switcher of choice, to their lineup of people from execs to production teams, to them suggesting to put students on camera. It's not what this industry needs, and it's scary to think other conferences will be motivated to start their own networks based on this one.
