I have been watching quite a bit of ESPN hoops as I continue to work on growing my career and getting more work and such. I did an ESPN game on a grass 3000 and it was difficult, but I was able to do it (with a major power hit at the arena). I am just curious if anyone has any tips on getting everything on an ESPN game. Any tips are much appreciated.

I always have my keyers set up like this. ME3 K1 - Font 1 ME3 K2 - Bug DSK K1 - Tele DSK K2 - KF 1 - Font 2, keyer off - KF 2 - Fast Forward keyer on... Last KF - Font 2, keyer off If they have the Bug in and Font 1 in and ask for me to cross to font 2 (almost never happens) I hit the Keyer 1 button in ME 3 and the DSK 2 button at the same time. They both have the same Trans rate set up so the effect is a cross dissolve. Cutting clean can be a problem because the ME's don't react at the same time. If they do this alot I build a master emem that cuts clean for me. All this said, I rarely have a director ask for me to cross dissolve between fonts during play. They might cross between the bug and the font. If they ask for Font 2 simply reach up and put it in K1 ME3. Since ESPN uses a lower positioned bug I can cross between the bug and Font 1 or 2 all day as long as I remember what keyer I am on. Happy punching! Scott
It's really no different than any other show. Just about 10 basic FFV elements, so many of them can be used in any place. The only challenge may be providing clocks, but they're not DVE heavy and for the most part you can split key the clocks with bug. They give you a very handy sheet to explain how to use secondary feeds on the switcher as well as bus-linking the clean feeds. Really great stuff....their set-up sheet makes it such a breeze. It's not far off from a fox show. They all use the same basic premise of undercuts with FFV elements that you can get/put throughout the switcher without much modifcation.
Do you by chance have a copy of this sheet? That is one place I figured I am lacking a little, is the Split Keys / Secondary Feeds. As I have been working my way into TD'ing...I have been placed on smaller shows to start and I am slowly working my way up. I know some of the things I am doing have to have an easier way to do them... Thanks Everyone...
I have the general Idea figured out being new and such. I know they do alot of graphics, and Fast Forward elements. I just noticed a bit of difficulty with everything only having the two keyers... I am just looking for tips that could help make it easier. I think since I did my first ESPN Hoops show not to long ago I may have built things more difficult than I had too...
I have no idea about an espn show, but as far as the keyers and being on a 3K, I assume you are familiar with layered mode? This is one way to help out. Also if you have any promos that need to be keyed that are different source then FFV, could always use the dsk keyer you use for the fast forward and change it for that effect, then have replay emem change it back to FFV. I would hope the director realized on a 3/4K that with a bug crossing between fonts is not easy, and if not should be reminded before the show. I used to ask directors when do you use the 2nd page of deko if at all. Typically it was only for lineups and other items that could be setup with some notice in ME 2, or wherever. This is not ground breaking but I would also build emems to go with chyron 2 instead of chyron 1. So bank 0 cams with bug, bank 1 with chyron 1, bank 2 chyron 2, bank 3 clean, bank 4 some sort of kludge to help if the bug goes down (typically chyron and dve for clock). Not sure if this helps you at all, maybe you already knew most of it, just figured throw in my 4K experience, life was so tough back then with only 2 keyers per ME :)
