We are haing an issue going from a triple box to a split box. We are working on the SONY 8000A with the 4 channel DME.

Is there a way to punch from the triples to the split or double box without glitching?

I would love to add more DVE channels, but it's not in the budget.

Suggestions welcomed.
who was the director?
Ed Hernandez. Was that pre or post heart-attack? I've heard lots of stories from the "Pre" days. Laid back and mellow now. He directs 5-7am & 9-10 am (show below) If he calls out sick or something, I'm his b/u director, sub TD comes in to fill TD spot. I direct 11am-11:30am. The show was our Sales & Community hour long show. Top of the show banter...host in studio..co-host in courtyard (outdoor segment)...tossing to "Word of the Day" graphic. Ed's resonse, "Ooooohh! Can you make the boxes move instead of pop into place?" (said DURING toss to the boxes) "I'll have that for ya next time"
Tell Brian Plumb I send my best...
Will do. Very cool guy

Send me a PM if you think it's more appropriate, but who was the director? I used to work in engineering at KXTV, from 1993-1996. Tell Brian Plumb I send my best...

What is it about newsies who always giggle at the "big" effects, like a 3 box? I can't tell you how many times I built something that hit air, and there was a "rush of excitement" in the control room. It's 3 damn pictures on the screen of 3 dumb reporters. One time on a 2 channel DVE, we pre-recorded 2 reporters standing looking stupid, then live we had the other 2 reporters standing looking stupid so we could have a 4 box. The newsroom must've been standing and applauding. And then there's the glitches, that they don't care about. I got into a heated debate with a newsroom who didn't care that when they went from a live reporter shot, & the ENG truck switched to the mast cam (or vise versa), the picture froze, went to hash, then froze on the next image, then locked up. As the TD I can't allow that kinda crap on air. My engineering boss, who agreed with me (& used to TD), said "The newsroom controls what goes on their newscasts," & "it's in their budget to fix that next year." We suggested having them tape the mast cam, & we could roll it in live. Nope, "it's not LIVE then." Why do they have to look "cool" when it looks like crap? It's news people! Just deliver it! Ignite fixed all their problems. --- Dan
if your 2box has 3 channels of DME already set up, with the 3rd channel off screen, it should work.
I second that! Oddly enough, I just ran into this scenario myself yesterday. If I knew about this scenario ahead of time I could have built it, but ya know how it goes. It was a spur of the moment call (I preset the 3 box instead of the 2 box, and the producer & director got all stupidly giddy - wanted to know if I could go between them <4 DME capability>) "Ummmm....Sure...it glitches though" "That's OK, it looks cool" **I now have that transition built for just those "inspirational" moments Don B. I think I've used a 2 key frame effect. KF1 is 2box, KF2 is 3box (KF1 already has 3 channels of DME set up for the 3box). Then just hit Next KF & Prev KF, or Run & Rewind might work (with a 1 frame transition so you don't see the move). You should be able to have different video sources in each KF too, and a different background for your art work (still, anim, etc.). On the 8K, I've also messed around with using Effect Dissolves between 2 (or 3) different snap shots inside the ME (no shot box, no effects, etc.). I've gotten some of the desired effect I've needed to do a 2 channel squeeze back of video in a box, you could try that too. You might still get a glitch, but again, if your 2box has 3 channels of DME already set up, with the 3rd channel off screen, it should work. --- Dan

The reason for the glitch is because the DME & the Video input are switching at the same time...the DME adds one frame of delay (as do all DVE's), and so you see the glitch. The way that I've solved this on my DME's is by having the double-box use the main video inputs, & the triple-box have the borders fully on, with external video as the border feed. This way, you can preset your feeds into the borders...when you switch between the 2 & 3 box effect, the video will already be there & you can avoid the glitch.
