Does anybody have any experience with the Grass Valley Turbo? We bought two of them to use as key/fill devices in HD. We've had multiple problems with them, but the current issue we have is that sometimes the two channels don't play in sync. Sometimes they'll start in sync and then one channel will jump ahead or behind, or they just won't start together. At first we were controlling them with our kayak via amp, then we tried with a GPI. Same result (on two separate turbos). I was wondering if anybody out there is using this device in HD with success, or is having similar issues.

We're also running 422. We initially had it running through the 422 matrix on our router, but then hard wired it using the exact same cable length to preclude the router causing any problems. As I said we also tried a single GPI which told both channels to play. That didn't work either, so I don't know if anything will. It's also worth noting that this problem also persisted on the SDI outputs.

We thought the same thing about network congestion, so we unplugged it and still got the same result. You're right about the DVI thing, which is a pain, because you have to run it through a timeable DVI to HDSDI converter. It seems to me the turbo is more of a prosumer device.

I worked with a Turbo about 2 years ago via AMP with a Kalypso. I had some issues with it crashing occasionally and even though AMP was suppose to support multiple folders it did have trouble sometimes calling up clips in multiple folders. I used chroma key so I didn't regularly use F/K. I did experiment with F/K on a limited basis and had no problems. I forgot how I assigned them so that they would get the play command at the same time. You should have them under the same device level in the timeline. Does sound more like a turbo problem though. Is it on a high traffic network, it does run windows and it is possible it is doing other things that may effect it's playback. Are you controlling via ethernet or serial. Would think serial would be a better bet. I didn't think Turbo did true HD? It uses a DVI connector right?

One work around (if possible) is to just chroma key all your transitions. That'll get rid of your fill/key slip issues.

Matt ... I worked at a station a couple of years ago that installed a Kalypso and 2 of the M-Series iVDRs. We had similar issues getting both channels to roll simultaneously using the AMP protocol. At the time, it was suggested that we buy a Lance controller and handle things that way. Since you did try GPI and had similar results, I'm guessing that P-Bus might yield the same. Back then, it was also suggested to us that it might be a limitation of the switcher's software. Just thought I'd chime in and let you know that the difficulty you're seeing isn't anything new. I left, so I'm not sure if they ever resolved the problem, or are still using a work-around.
