hi all,
the company i work for is about to make a choice between the above vmu's.
as no one in australia has operated a kayenne, i would be interesred in knowing from those who have operated both the sony and kayenne their preference and why.
regards,
mal.

many thanks for the advive. yes we are also looking at the snell. any thoughts on that?
Why not look at a Snell Kahuna or a Ross Octane?

Both switchers are fine products and can ultimately provide you with the functionality that you need. Previous questions like yours have elicited a flurry of pro-GV and pro-Sony arguments, which I am sure will be following - along with this I would suggest that you also include looking at the new 8000X as part of the mix. Rather than offer a comparison of features, and without divulging information that could potentially come back to bite me, let me offer this somewhat cryptic suggestion: if you can, try to wait for about 6-8 weeks before making a decision...the long-term choice should become clearer by then.
If you were at NAB this past April, one thing talked about was the financial health of Grass Valley and it's parent company. A simple web search can provide plenty of info.
Hopefully the company is sold to someone like Harris and the products continue.
thanks bob,
i was concerned that the sony may be considered old in regards to the kayenne.
the vmu will be used for programs including news sport and variety so i guess i'm talking about about versatile and intuitive vmu.
regards,
mal.
I used to use an 8000 on a regular basis. Not that often now. The 8k is far better than the 7k family but it still feels like someone who never switched designed it. Once I sit at it for a while, I start thinking Sony, so things become better.
As for the Kayenne, I found out that i was going to be using one three days before the game. The crewer gave me an extra hour for setup. The truck engineer that knew the box wasn't at the show, the replacement engineer didn't know the switcher. The game was a local NBA feed. I got the show built in the time provided with no meal penalty or issues. That was early November '09, I haven't seen the switcher since.
If you know a Kalypso, you can do a basic show on a Kayenne.
There are things I would like to add or change on the Kayenne, but those could possibly come with software updates.
What type of TV will you be doing with these switchers? News? Remote productions? Entertainment?
basic productions including news, variety etc. just looking for an easy, intuative vmu

From a logical point of view I would say go with the Sony. Reason being almost every HD studio and OB truck in Australia uses them. If you go the Keyenne route and need to bring a freelancer in your going to be in a world of hurt as they will need a fair few observers to learn a new desk. From what I've read about the Keyenne it sounds very similar to the 8000 anyway but having people who are experienced on the switcher makes a lot of sense. Just in the Sydney market I believe every Network ueses the 8000/9000, ABC, Channel 7, Channel 10, Foxtel, Fox Sports, Channel 9 recently purchased as well.
For me the Kayenne would have to be immensely better then 8000 to overcome the lack of local support.
