Is anyone using the Karrera or Kayenne with the optional integrated external ClipStore that replaces the need for a FF or Spotbox ETC.

The cable company I freelance for is looking at doing an upgrade to their trucks going with the 2.5 ME Karrera, they are wondering if they should go with a FF like system or the integrated system from GV,

Any input would be appreciated!

Hello!

I work with the K2/Kayenne combo every day and it works great. It's quick to program your timelines with load/cue/play/loop events and it comes up as a separate level. You can also put a channel into video/video mode instead of video/matte which gets you two loops out of one channel (provided they have the same length).

A note though, if you get your material off tapes and not as files, I think it would be better to go the EVS/Lance route since ingesting your clips would be quicker.

If they want to be able to rent out the truck, they would be better off getting a Spotbox.  If that's out of their price range (which is very likely), an Abekas ClipStore has become very common, and there is an HD version of the Fast Forward.  The nice thing about the Abekas unit is the ability to import quicktime movies with alpha channel, and it will separate it into fill and matte for you.  They run about $15k, so not hugely expensive, relatively speaking.

On the other hand - the Clipstore option also allows Quicktime import with alpha, DV-100 or AVC-i, provides the ability to combine video/matte and audio tracks into one clip so that you set the sync, build the clip then never have to worry about it again, lets you see thumbnails in the menu, and every channel is a video/key/audio channel. The good thing about the Karrera/Clipstore combination is the ease with which the TD can load clips via the menu USB connection, then edit them or build the video/key/audio clips without needing extra people in the loop or having to leave the control room.

My local sports network has speciified that even trucks which don't have GV switchers must use K2 Summits as their graphics servers and use them exclusively in their studio center. I am in the UK so that may not be a great help, but it is 32 boxes of Summit in trucks and 12 stuidios worth.

I am working on a truck this week with both Summit and EVS servers - the EVS for replay and editing, the Summit for graphics.

I would really say you need to see how it works before advising your guys.

John, with the Spotbox, you can backup and restore the Spotbox via the XFile. It sounds like you can do the same with the K2, correct?

Toby, what replay machines are they looking at? Are they looking at using the Grass K2 replay machine? If "tape" is going to be a Grass area, it doesn't make sense to buy one EVS.

Mike,

They are looking at the K2 Dyno's, they also had a conference call with Sony on Friday. With GV they are looking at a package deal for router, replay, switcher and cameras, I'm not sure if they go with Sony if they would still use the Dyno.

Once they switcher Southern Cross over to HD, there will be so much room in that thing I might just get lost.

Hi Mike,

Yes - the GV Summit used as clip store allows you to load or unload files directly via the USB on the menu and is really fast as it is at the end of a gigabit connection. In fact all K2 Summits allow load and unload via USB as there is a socket on the front of the frames. You can export the files as the GXF GV format so that dual-layer video clips get directly loaded as keyable on other units and if you use Edius there is a K2 connect module which lets you directly load or unload files from the editor. (I am not sure if the dual layer clips work in that module but a Gv Edius expert could tell you.)

Carl from SVT makes a good point, that the EVS controllers and the ability to let an EVS Op deal with cutting up tape transfers is a good thing, but of course you can let another person use the K2 using its Ops Centre software to do the same.

It's all a judgement which is hard to help with unless you know the full story of course, but the choice is there and there are good operational answers. EVS and GV do make fantastically reliable server systems.
