Hi All,

I am using the Sony 7350 with 1 channel of 7000 DME. I am having to jump back and forth into the DME because of all the squeezes I am doing. I have been trying to get into the DME by using a camera cut but sometimes have to cut from a camera to the same camera in the DME. It is then that I see a time shift. Obviously it is because of the processing right? If the camera is on quick pan it looks horrible - however if the camera is static you hardly notice. My question of course is there anyway around this? Is something not set up right?

Hey Zach My fix for this is not universally popular, but here it is nonetheless: On m/e 1: key m/e3 (or m/e3 clean if you want to lose the bug) in the DME. Adjust your timeline to include the p/p delegate and build a 5 frame dissolve from m/e3 to m/e1 on the p/p at the beginning of the effect (remember to add a 5fm dummy kf at the beginning of the DME move). If you run the effect on wide shots you won't notice it at all and on tight panning shots you'll get a bit of a funky smear, but it's less objectionable than the hard cut time shift. If your director complains about the smear then you're going to have to explain the facts of life which are that if he can't make up his mind far enough in advance about which camera to put in the squeezeback and call it as such with enough lead time for you to set it up then this is the best solution. BTW, when stations do squuezebacks they just put the master control switcher output into a DPM700, cut it on air and squeeze it back - you always see the jump. Some veteran master control operators know to wait for the wide shot to make this less noticeable, but most just cut it in when the station log and clock tell them to - production values be damned!

Hey Mike, I think you might be referring to the 4 line drop. That is tuff to find in the silly Sony Menu's. It can be found in the appropriate keyer menu and in the EDGE function. Thanks for the the idea - but that is not where my problem is. I am talking about a time shift (delay) not horizontal shift. Thanks!

Zach, if the 8 line "edge" on??? Dang, I forget what menu, but on many 7k's the default if for the 8 line drop to be on.

I am keying the DME over DVD Background and font on ME1 - taking that ME... DME is full frame then squeezes back. I guess I just have to live with the shift and try to cut in on a camera cut....

Zach, where are you keying the DME? If you are trying it on the DSK you are dead. The DSK unit is technically a separate frame and there is a large amount of delay. If you are keying on an ME you should be able to get the shift down to an acceptable amount.

There is no way around it, going through a DME will always add at least one frame of video processing delay. You just have to carefully plan around it.
