I received an e-mail 1/24/06 that advised Cincinnati based CBS Sports TD Norm Patterson was found dead in an elevator at a San Diego hotel, Monday, January 23, 2006. Norm was there preparing for CBS Golf this weekend.

1/25/06-Update
From the San Diego Union-Tribune:

"CBS employee dies"

Gathering for their first golf telecast of the year, CBS Sports crew members were shocked yesterday to learn one of their members had died. Norm Patterson, a technical director on golf and football telecasts for the past 10 years, died Monday night after an apparent heart attack at the University City hotel where he was staying. He was 45.

"We're like a family; we spend so much time together," said Lance Barrow, CBS' coordinating producer for golf. "This is a slap in the face. It's a hard way to get started."

A minister from Barrow's Texas church will fly here today to conduct a memorial service for crew members tomorrow morning. Patterson's death also will be acknowledged during one of the network's Buick telecasts this weekend. Patterson, who lived in Cincinnati, is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Kudos to CBS for dedicating their college football game tonight to Norm Patterson. The graphic came up as the last element of the rollout- after the final score.

I don't get it! I just don't get it! Norm was the most unflappable, relaxed, sane person I ever met in this business. If I was given one sentence to describe him i would write "an ocean of calm". This really, really hurts.
