Just finished the second period, and I don't know who's directing this game - hey, it could be some really well-respected director with 20 years of directing hockey under his belt - what I do know is that he's cutting off the game cam so much during action that the game is practically unwatchable. I would turn this crap off if it wasn't the USA team, and I love hockey, that's how annoying this is.

What is it about hockey that makes guys think it's okay to leave the game camera while play is going on? Can you imagine if, during a football game, the director decided that every third handoff or so he would cut to his slash cam just for a different look? Sure, hockey has far fewer stoppages and thus less opportunity to use different cams live, but should the director's boredom override the presentation of a decent telecast for hockey fans?

just venting. 3-2 Russia by the way. I think it's a good game - just hard to tell with all the f***ing unnecessary cutting going on.

I tend to agree with you. Sometimes TV folk really want to be flashy and impress people, but the die-hard sports fans just want to see the overall shape of the play and will change the channel if the "show" gets in the way of that. I'm fine with seeing handhelds for big hits on the glass or skating behind the crease, and high tight when the puck is tied up along the boards, but not much else. I've seen a similar phenomenon with huge basketball telecasts, where they have 16 cameras in the building and they try to use every one of them as a game cam at one point or another. I really don't need to see a pseudo-steadicam shot on a freethrow. Rule of thumb: You are starting to get excessive when there are more camera operators than players.

I thought Canadian directors pretty much stayed on the game cam, during play, unless there was a really good reason to cut off it. I could be wrong.

Is it Jim Marshall? Because I think it was a Canadian crew that's doing it.

Nothing. I'm surprised you didn't know that just by reading it.

Want to clue me in as to what this has to do with Grass Valley switchers?
