Just watching the Masters on my day off on UHD and I'm amazed at how good it looks. I'm sure golf tournaments have been done in HD before but they must be rare; this is the first one I can remember seeing in HD. I'm not even a golf fan and I'm watching it just for the great pictures.

The surround sound is great too. I just realized, this is HD-only right now, because USA doesn't go live until 4:00 pm.

I've never worked a golf event; can anyone inform me as to how many cameras/trucks/TDs are typically required for an event like this? Must be a shitload.
Do cameras get tallies from the router if they're being isoed to the EVS?
On my show they're actually fed two aux outputs of my switcher that they control with a cp330 router head. I then assign those auxes to the green tally output- so they get a green tally, RF cams get a flashing red.
as eric said we had 54 HD cameras...a couple hards on each hole (flank, green, tee, pov, etc...) plus ten roving minis, a robo on 13, a crane, a jib and a couple in the 'butler cabin' for the jacket presentation. there were many trucks, maybe 12? the back nine, or main truck, was NEP SS24 A,B and C. i switched that for CBS on an 8k. the front nine was Coreplex Platinum? a kalypso, switched by Jeff Ringel for CBS. then there was NMT HD1 which provided 'swing' machines used by both trucks. F & F GTX12 provided the HD minis... then there were trucks for sportsline.com, bbc, tokyo broadcasting, etc...provided by NEP and DOME. fun. jonas
The last time I was on Corplex Platinum it had a Sony 8000 on it. What happened?

We don't have a show in Pittsburgh. The ESPN exclusive shows are produced by ERT so it wasn't me.

Mike, I once visited the NEP compuund at a course in Pittsburgh (I don't remember the name) about 3 years ago. The show was carried on delay by ESPN, was that you TD'ing there? I got there during the show and left early so I didnt' get to talk to anyone except the transmission engineer.

On my ABC golf show we have anywhere from 26-36 cameras, including 4 RF, 1 jib, 1 Super Slow motion 6,000-20,000+ FPS, Blimp, a 140ft crane, 2 booth cameras. We generally have a fixed high camera at each hole from 8-18 and low and fairway positions that move from early holes to late holes- some on moving spiders. We have the production/audio/graphics truck, a graphics/ISO/ISO Audio truck, Tape truck, RF truck and support truck. I TD the show, I also have a setup TD who travels ahead to the next show and supervises the utilities and cabling. We have two EVS operators that cut cameras on a router to their EVS machines in a seperate truck and they follow the direction of the ISO director and producer. Their audio is fed by a dedicated A1 who also follows the ISO director and basically mixes two ISO feeds to tape utilizing 8 shotgun mics, handheld mics, tower mics, green "plop" mics, and tee mics. HD on a golf course is tricky, especially if you use fiber as you must put a generator at each camera location for power. HD over triax is tricky as we have some long cable runs. On some shows we have over 120,000 feet of triax cable alone, not to mention the audio, booth fiber, etc. If anyone is near one of my shows, I'd be happy to give a tour. Better act now, ABC is jumping ship from golf, just like everything else. Mike Tiffee
