Our studio is going to start using the 8000. I have been using a 7350 since they came out. I have had some training on the 8000 and understand the similarities and differences. Would it be worth the $350 to get the training CD or should I try the old trial and error method of training?
ps The disk we bought last year were not based on the newest software. You may also find on older posts on this board talk of it being updated.
I'm in the process of updating it all the way to v.7.20 right now.

When we moved from a GVG 4k to the 8000 last year...."we" bought 3 copies of the CD...one to keep in house and 2 to "sign out". ( we have 8 staff TD's...as well as freelance/fill in) I will say if you are going to be the one who programs all the ENG menus, the CD helps. I literally had the laptop on the console next to the switcher and went through a good deal of the ENG menus step by step. I would agree w/ others...the disk..plus your training...and most importantly just sitting at the switcher will help you learn. We had to recreate effects that were built on a GVG 4k and a DVEous... You will also learn just by switching on it what works and what can be done better. Hope this helps. Curt ps The disk we bought last year were not based on the newest software. You may also find on older posts on this board talk of it being updated.
Any ideas if I can get this CD in the UK?
Here's a link to the "training Institute" in the US. I'd suggest talking with your Sony SSE to see if they might be able to work something out for you, either for on-site training, or for the training CD. I think the CD is probably a good purchase for people that just need a quick tutorial, or for a facility that has high operator turn-over (like a college program, or small market station). Good luck! I'll start by being the "odd man out" on this one - my experience with the on-site training on the MVS-8000 was less than satisfactory. When I had the training, it was back in 2002, and it just wasn't a good experience (for many reasons). I know that a lot has changed since then, and I believe that Dana's involvement and skills has really helped the training program and ongoing support for DVS/MVS users. That being said, the training CD is helpful, but I believe that you'd benefit more from having someone else come in and show you some "super-user" concepts on the switcher. The CD would be a good purchase for beginners on the board, but I'm not sure that it would take you to the next level, make any sense? If a person comes in, you can ask questions and throw some real-life situations at them, while the CD is more about concepts and getting you ready to be at the point you guys are at now. I hope that helps! Enjoy your new board!! Matt
We did have on site training and it was great. I am looking to dive way into what the 8000 can do. Right now I could cut our show with the training I have but would like more insight into the 8000.
If you serach in this forum, I believe there was another thread about TD certification or something that talked about the CD, and some thoughts on it. I would split the cost with co-workers and leave it at the station to watch. Or better yet the station should buy it for you. $350 is pocket change for most stations. Bill

How much is your company spending on the new switcher? They won't pay for some on-site training? I have never seen the CD, I can't comment on it. On-site training was great, we were able to present real life scenarios to the trainer who coached us as we created the solution. (We were using some training time to get ready for our games.)
