Hey Gang,
This may be more for JohnHowardSC. I am curious on the process of HDNet replaying the NASCAR races. Seems to be a feed from the "current" ntwk provider, yet the replay efxs & gpxs are HDNets. I also saw in the credits that Speed produces it for them. Just curious if they are running a switcher connected to the ntwk switcher or cutting thier own show (sidebyside)? With the Tophat or timing bar, using a clean tape feed and some editing would seem impossible, though it airs a few days later.
JohnHowardSC... too bad Fox did not have the MIS race. I was there again for my 3rd Annual Father's Day, day at the races- as a spectator. Would have been nice to meet you in person. Thanks for any insight!

Matt, Thanks for remembering to ask (about my post). The interesting deal was the credit given to SPEED on the HDNet broadcast. It appeared to me SPEED produced it for them, but with HDNet's gpx pkg. It was the Michigan race, (I was there as a fan for a change) and did notice an extra of roof-top cameras... more than normal. So maybe they did their own thing. Camera angles seemed very similar to the TNT show though. Anyway, was curious on how much "sharing" goes on. It's a pretty tough show to do for one ntwk, let alone 2-3. Thanks Again! Scott S.

John & Scott... So, here's what I learned over the weekend: HDNet does full production on the NASCAR Grand National Division races, and runs replays of the Nextel Cup races. I'm told that they add their graphics (I'm not sure whether in post, or if it is a GPI trigger that fires something back in their Denver facility that allows them to do it "live to tape") to the cup races for the replays. I was also told that they have an agreement with SPEED to provide a center-cut clean feed so that SPEED can add their graphics and run a re-broadcast on their channel. I'm not clear on how much support SPEED provides for HDNet, as HD has their own hat and graphic look. Hope that helps... Matt

[quote="JohnHowardSC"]Hi Scott and Matt - ...even though the daily drive from our hotel in Ann Arbor to the track in Brooklyn is a bit of a hike down a two-lane road. At least away from the track we have better food to choose from! Thanks for the info. I look forward to Matt's findings. Scott S.

Hi Scott and Matt - Scott, I'm sorry I missed you in Michigan - I would have loved to have been there. I truly do love that part of the country, even though the daily drive from our hotel in Ann Arbor to the track in Brooklyn is a bit of a hike down a two-lane road. At least it's a very scenic hike! If my NFL show heads to Detroit this year (I'm sure we'll get up there at least once) I'll let you know. To be honest I'm not really sure what HD Net is doing for their Cup rebroadcasts. I remember that they used to bring in a full production for many races a few years ago, but now that the "host" broadcasters are all doing HD, I would have to imagine that they're taking the host's (i.e. FOX, Turner, ESPN) clean feed (line cut + replays, no graphics or animations) and posting it with their branding and gpx. Come to think of it, I do believe that a friend of mine at SPEED is posting some or all of the races for them which may explain the SPEED credit. I'll have to give her a call - better yet I'll tune in and take a look. When we were in Phoenix this year they were with us to broadcast the regional NASCAR West series that was there on Friday night. They brought in their own producers, director, AD, etc., and used our facilities (i.e. our Game Creek trucks and much of our crew). It was a little different to TD that because I found my self going, "Your bug isn't 4X3 saf.... nevermind." I'm not used to being completely free of 4X3! Hope everyone is well! John

Scott... As far as I know, HDNet still produces a number of NASCAR races themselves (live, then re-running it a few days later). When I was TDing NASCAR for them back in 2004, it was just the Busch races, but they did all of their own production, and actually did a 4x3 clean feed for Speed. I'm working with HDNet this weekend, and the Director I'll be with is the TD for their NASCAR stuff now ... I'll ask what the scoop is. Matt
