Hello, I was asked to help with a problem on a 2 M/E Kayak DD. It has a ram recorder as option and the goal is to use the GPO/tally contact to trigger a MiniDisc player, so to play audio together with video clips.

I have assigned a GPO contact as tally for the ram recorder but it seems to me that it fails to close the contact. Everything works fine, however, if I assign any other primary source to the same GPO. This looks like a software bug to me (the switcher is running v6.8.8). As a workaround, I have assigned the GPO to a dummy source that keyed (invisibly) by a macro that also puts the ram recorder in play.

Unfortunately, there is no other means to trigger the MiniDisc, it doesn't support any serial protocol.

Does anyone has experience with a similar situation?

Thanks in advance.

I can only choose GPO outputs 1-8 while building a timeline in sidepanel. Enric, can you please explain how I can trigger GPO's 9-32? Thanks! Matt

Hello evertbody, About the audio embedded you are reason in the DD35 and the XtenDD support audio embedded. The sony dvs 9000 doesn't support it, but next year the dvs 8000g it will. And I heard something about a new audio ram recorder in Kayak early... And for the GPO it's really that you have 8 in the menu, but if you need use more you can do it using the macro to know the code. Regards, Enric

Hi Matt, please check the settings for your used GPO's in the Install/Ebox/GPO menu. The correct settings are shape=pulse Idle state=open and the puls duration is normally 2 fields but can be increased if needed. Check also the config/Ebox/Miscellaneous Menu. There is a button named as GPO enabled. This button need no be switched on otherwise the timeline wouldn?t fire the GPO. Regards Dirk

Silvio, Glad you found it. Yes I don't think anyone else offers embedded audio on the ram recorders. I thought the DD series did (xtend), maybe not. I know Kalypso's answer is that it is a video switcher, and to use a GPI to a digitcart. I have heard rumors Sony will support it in the future.
You should not be using a tally for this, the switcher should have a GPO that is assignable in a timeline. It should be in a seperate area on the switcher frame. When you build the effect that plays the ram recorder (or macro), also add the GPI out to the effect, so when you play ram recorder the GPI goes out to the mini disc.
That is my idea too, but the Kayak has 32 GPI contacts for output (also 8 in input) that it uses either as GPO or tally. The switcher also lets me assign a tally/GPO to any the ram recorder channel, so it makes me think that it was designed this way. I will check back the manual, but I have not found any other way to trigger a contact other than tally. (Edited) Thanks, I found what I need. I can set a command in timelines for triggering GPOs. It also makes sense to me that ram recorders don't tally, since they have no monitor outputs. It is strange, however, that they are assignable to tally contacts.
This was a pretty standard way of doing this before FFV and spot boxes that have audio associated with their clips came about.
It would be even better to have audio on the ram recorder, as the Kahuna, for one, does. At least one AES pair would be enough!
