My station has gone with the Kayak (against the TDs recommendation) and now we need some thumbdrives for it. What size would you recommend we get?

This will mostly be our news switcher, no sports shows on it.

Thanks
Bryan

The Kayak won't handle anything over 4 GB. These drives are currently supported: Apacer USB Flash Drive (HandySteno) 256MB (USB1.1) These first three Apacer USB flash drives require a cable adapter for the Kayak HD USB 4 slot. Normally part of delivery Apacer USB Flash Drive (HandySteno) 256MB (USB2.0) Apacer USB Flash Drive 128MB (USB1.1) Apacer Handy Steno HT202 USB 2.0 Flash Drive 128MB Buffalo Firestix 1GB (USB2.0) V6.8.5 or higher required Corsair Flash Voyager 1GB (USB2.0) V6.8.5 or higher required LG XTIC Mirror 1GB (USB2.0) V6.8.5 or higher required Memorex Thumb Drive USB 256 MB Memorex TravelDrive - Smart U3, 1GB (USB2.0) V6.8.5 or higher required PQI Corp. Just checked my drive, I have used a 2.5ME Kayak several times. Each still, V/K, is 5.5 mb, all other files are rather small, one 99kb (a config file I think), and the me snapshot files seem to be 4kb each. I'd say that you should be able to put one show into something like 1-1.5mb excluding stills. Either a 1 or 2 GB drive should work. I would go for quality over size. One thing to remember, the memory used in thumb drives has a limited number of read/write cycles. The number should be more then 10,000 cycles BUT you may get one that has only 500 cycles. Backup to a computer and have a loaded spare available.

Memory is pretty cheap nowadays. I have three 8-GB thumbdrives (1 for the switcher & 1 for each of my two external DME's) and a 16-GB thumbdrive for use on the Kalypso on show remotes. The 8-GB drives hold more than enough for 2 shows worth of data & stills at home, but I run out of room on the 16-GB drive because I tend to have a LOT of HD animations. But for a relatively small amount of money you can get a bunch of memory. I'd suggest getting the biggest drive you can. It's better to have memory and not need it than to run out of it when you need it.

I know the Kayak is very fast storing and re-loading although I never looked at the storage space it takes up with it's files. I do have about 25 still and some other media stored on those drives as well so I think you should be fine at a staion with 2 GB drives depending on type of media your going to injest.
