In the spirit of the same topic over in the GVG area, if you could talk directly to Sony and give ideas for improving the 8000 series or an entirely new switcher, what would you ask for?

An option in those menus to also choose an aux bus (even if not assigned to an output) to feed the other pgm/key preview outputs background source and to feed video for a sub mask.

Hello Rick! Yes I know about using key2/4 as a genereic recall row, that is a nice feature. But the last macro recalled won't not light up in this mode either (only when it runs) and I actually don't want to split the LCD display (is there a way to t disable this feature?). Also it would be great if you could turn the key1/3 row into this mode as well. /Carl
When I attach a macro (with macro only) on the key1/key2 bus it would be a good thing that the button would light up when pressed (like on the DD35). I know it could be confusing as to what you have keyed but having the option would be great! I usually load the timelines for my replay transitions with macros attached to the key1 row of the source on my game M/E with a "run" button at the far right of the crossbar. It would be nice to have an indication of which macro (timeline) is loaded before I hit run. /Carl
Carl, Have you tried the Key2/4 Utility mode? This feature allows you to press a button on any M/E and use the Key 2/4 buss as another memory recall row. You can assign virtually anything to this on a button by button basis. It will even split the LCD displays so the top row show the first 4 characters of whatever memory (macro, shotbox, utility, etc) you've assigned and the bottom row to show the first 4 characters of the crosspoint. The advantage this has over using macro attachments is you can get back to full keyer crosspoint functionality with a single button press. RE
Just curious, & I should probably start a new thread, but the last post from Bill reminded me... What do you use Keyer Snapshots for? I was playing with them the other day, and I don't see a need for them with all the other ability of saving/recalling stuff on the 8000? --- Dan
I have a couple of really simple Key Snapshots that I use: On P/P Key 1, I have a simple mask set-up that masks out the "Live" or "Breaking news" bug from the top of our supers. Just an easy way to make something that was input incorrectly work in an instant. Also, I have another set-up for P/P Key 3 that lets me insert our side flags. It recalls the right source (FM), and does a mask invert to let the BKGD video pass through in the 4:3 area. Just an easy way to cover-up side bars from another station, or to fill the blank space that might be there for one reason or another. On that same keyer, another simple Key Snap recalls Viz 3 and has it ready to go as a graphic source in a pinch. Matt

I was playing with them the other day, and I don't see a need for them with all the other ability of saving/recalling stuff on the 8000? --- Dan
I have a keyer snapshot that part of it's recall is to mainly put the correct source there, but to also change keyer wipe to right to left wipe, part of an effect I have a macro changes key 1 and 2 to wipe and wipes across under a animation. Also have a key snapshot that selects FM 7 as a source and a DME wipe that stamps on that FM. I can then use a macro that recalls that keyer snapshot, and then inserts the keyer with a rate of XX duration to fly in that GFX. Without a keyer snapshot I would have to build a pgm/pst timeline and then worry about source holds and key inhibits, etc. Also I occasioanlly change key 3 or 4 to different sources easier to call up a keyer snapshot then to change over to dsk 3 and change source, etc. Honestly the keyer snapshots are a great advantage over how you have to do it on a Kalypso

I'm running frame-mem animation effects that track thorugh multiple monitors. With 17 switchable monitors on the floor and all of those being feed by my aux bus, I can tie up "users" pretty quickly.

Dan, Key snapshots are a way to save and recall all properties associated with a certain keyer without having to recall an M/E snapshot. For example, I have a wipe I use on one of my shows where I have to use a keyer snapshot to change the hue on the keyer. Then I have another snapshot that changes the keyer back to normal.

Here is an idea. Maybe when they expand all the other stuff hopefully to have more effects, macros, etc etc. Add more keyer snapshots. The 4 for live recalls make sense. I would like to have some virtual one's. They can be built on any keyer snapshot, and moved to a virtual keyer snapshot in a menu, then deleted from the snapshot I built it on. Then I can access those virtual keyer snapshots through macros. They can be added to any keyer determined by the macro, PP key 2, virtual keyer snap #15. In a macro I can select sources on the keyer but not keyer type, linear, dme, wipe, etc etc. This way keep important stuff for live recalls on the 4 panel shapshots, and rest can be used when calling up stuff with macros, flying in fonts, etc

I familiar with wipe snapshots, but I don't believe they will allow me to make an adjustment mid-wipe as my timeline does. Chris Bade WTVF Nashville

Here is one, I have mentioned in the past to someone at Sony and I think they said there may be power supply issues or something, but.. Since everything else is modular, why not have modular crosspoints. Sell them in groups of 4 maybe. Let someone buy 36 buttons or 28, or 40, or whatever suits them and fits in there facility. I would not mind putting some of the other modules on a wedge to the side of the board to allow for more crosspoints. I know they had 'plans' for a 48 button but never sold any, 48 was nice but probably a bit too big.

OK, I've got another one (and, again if this is currently a feature that I haven't found, let me know) I want to save a wipe that I've modified using a timeline as a "user wipe. " I've built an effect to wipe underneath a framestore animation. About 3/4 of the way thru the effect, I had to turn on the rotation of the wipe (wipe #1) a bit and then the rotation adjusts back to zero as the wipe completes. I want to be able to save the wipe effect I've built as a "user wipe" so I can just punch that wipe number and not have to use the effect I built. Is this currently possible? Seems like it would be.
I'd like something similar to what another switcher allows you to do by rapidly double-punching your preset and keyer crosspoint rows to quickly get to shifted inputs.
How long has this feature been around. Guess I don't do enough kalypso shows with shifted sources. Does that act like a latch or does it preset the shifted source on the button you dpop'd? I think the key 1/2 row feature of having your shifted sources is maybe an even better feature then this one anyway. Key 2 is preset bus of shifted soyrces key is pgm bus of shiftd sources, very cool. Not sure what happens to key 1 when in the macro/shot box mode for the key buses. I have mentioned before but the 8K could use a lot of work to their machine control, I think it can be a lot more robust.

adding to my list above #7-Being able to change the button color of shotboxe, snaphots, etc. This would come in real handy on the utility module to help group effects so they can be found quickly. -Curt

I'd like something similar to what another switcher allows you to do by rapidly double-punching your preset and keyer crosspoint rows to quickly get to shifted inputs. On that same note, something like that company's "source patching" would be helpful, too ... just a way of taking physical inputs and moving/reassigning them in place of something else. Similar to Curt's #6 idea, I'd like to see a "run" button that can be unique to each ME. In other words, if I have independent effects called-up in each ME, I'd like to be able to run them from each individual effects bank ... especially with the 8000G and the resizer abilities that were introduced, this would just be very handy. Software re-enterable MEs and Sub-MEs will be a great addition, too. I'd also like an easier way to see what an effect has been named without having to enable the different levels within the software. I also like Chris' idea about password protecting files ... probably more of an issue for the engineering set-ups, but I could see wanting to password protect basic show snapshots, effects and macros. Thanks for asking for our wish list!! Matt

Curt, I hear that v7.2 will allow you to re-enter without having to go out and come back in. I agree with having the extra display for your key row. That would be huge when you attach stuff or when you're in key2/4 shotbox mode. More than 4 characters displayed per line on the flexipad and xpoint LCD. I'd really love to see the source or macro names show up on the button instead of a readout between rows of buttons. That would eliminate the need for the extra LCD panel. When I'm teaching people about macros, I tell them, "Everything you can do online you can do offline but everything you can do offline you can't do online." How about being able to do everything no matter how you're recording a macro? Get rid of the way menu macros are handled now and just be able to incorporate menu button pushes into a regular macro. I know all you have to do is insert a menu macro into a regular macro but for me, it's one more thing to rename and one more file to have to manage. I'd love to be able to modify a shotbox the same way you can modify a snapshot. If I make changes, I'd love to be able to hold "shotbox" and hit the register I want and have it re-save everything. More macros and more PBus effects. Be able to modify, save, or create effects or snapshots through the menu or through macros. I know a macro records button pushes. Well it should be able to record every button push... not just most. Keyers and basic transitions on aux bus's. I'm sure I'll come up with more. -Allan

I love #6, there are those split fader bars that are available, they have buttons on them already, that would be a cool feature. #5 you can do with 7.11, but it does split your source names with the macro/shotbox, etc. And limits both to 4 characters. A lcd row in between key buses with a split display for each key bus I think has been suggested in the past and is a great idea. Also agree with #2

Chris, like the parent shotbox copy idea.... Rick, Here are a few that I can think of. 1- The ability to re-enter a version of the M/E...onto itself... ex...ME/2 Clean....re-entered on M/E 2 Key bus row for instance without having to physically run a cable in/out of the switcher frame. 2- Redesign the 1RU aux panels so they can be labeled more easily...Maybe instead of a single display that shows what is on the bus...make it like the crosspoint rows where there is a display along the entire button row 3- My intention is not to start a flame war w/ this one...but I still like how GVG does effect learning...select your enables...learn the regisiter...and you are done. I know adding an extra step for the Shotbox isn't a huge thing...but maybe give an option where you tie effects to shotboxes...so that you learn effect 1, it automatically stores that at Shotbox 1...etc.. But...also have a menu option to turn this off if you want to go the two step route or more flexibility. 4- We are still on version 5.42, so I apologize if this can be done in later version of software.but being able to Macro buttons like the "MOD"...would be cool. 5- Others mentioned this on another thread I think..but some way to label macros that are attached to the key bus row w/out having to use tape on those black wedge pieces...Cool idea...but having a LCD row above the Keybus row for macro labels would be great. 6-Maybe this one comes up just because I am tired...but how about a "macro attachable button"..on the ends of the vertical part of the T-bar...might be a cool place to put a "run" button... -Curt ps....ok...I guess I am really tired...that last one was a little out there...

I've got a few. And, if any of these are currently do-able please let me know: 1) The ability to either copy protect or password protect show files. 2) The ability to change the color of sources when using the Router (RTR) interface function of the aux panel. 3) The ability to copy a parent Shotbox file and have all the effects it uses copy with it.
Why not make major components modular and upgradeable? What do I mean, if one bought an original 8000, you can't take advantage of things offered on the newer "A" or "G" models. The frame memory upgrades for example. If one could have just replaced a card or two or even a small frame with the new module for a modest cost. How many frame mem upgrades could they have sold if they did it this way?
I agree with you, but I know why that happened, especially between the 8000 and the 8000A. The size of the 8000 went from 16RU down to 8RU when they came out with the 8000A. All the boards had to be changed, so pins, voltages, etc would no longer be compatible. Sony is not the only one "guilty" (for lack of a better term) of this.... But the primary reason for incompatible boards is the parts. After something has been on the market for a time, two things happen.... the parts get cheaper and they start to be phased out by whoever manufactures them. Inevitably, newer, cheaper parts need to be used to make the unit sustainable and less expensive. I believe that is exactly what happened between the 8000 and the 8000A. Also, at the time, Sony was going through the long process of getting all the lead out of the solder in all 5000+ of their professional products, which is no small undertaking. Many of the components were not compatible with lead-free solder. The BVE-9100 editor was a perfect example. I was told it was discontinued, not because the market for linear editors was gone, but because the unit could not be made lead-free without redesigning every board as a ridiculous cost. Past all that, I still agree with you :-) RE
