Hello...

Last question of the night I swear!!

Has anyone had a problem when after you load your effects etc...that the "data light" still stays on after the load window goes away? This light is the red square that is in the same area as the menu number ( top left of the GUI window)

I was told by a Sony rep to hold off on doing anything after loading until this light goes out. It seems that the light stays on for about 3-4 minutes after the load menu goes away..

Wondering if anyone else has seen this..and is there something that can be done to help. Between clearing before load.., the actual loading, and this...it can take a bit of time to load for a show.

This seems to happen more w/ the 8000A we have...rather than the 8000 non A. Both running 5.42

thank you

Curt

Here's what we purchased: LaCie D2 ESATA/FW/USB 320GB 7200rpm Hard Drive, and it ran us about $125. It supports Firewire, Firewire 800, high-speed USB, and eSATA. This was what our Sony Service Tech suggested, as we're running an 8000G with 7.11 software. From the 90 minutes it took me to do a "restore" on the Frame Mem from the internal drive, this took only 9 minutes to load, and a couple of more to cache the thumbnails. Matt
We didn't buy them directly. We had one of the project managers pick up 3 of them one day when he was at Staples. It came out of someones pocket and as long as it's not mine, I don't care :-)
Be sure to check your credit card! :)
I've been told that the drive that's currently supported is the Lacie D2 Quadra eSATA 1.5GBits, Firewire 800, Firewire 400, High-Speed USB 2.0 320 GB Model 301108U. We installed this model with our 7.1 (which was broken with the old Firewire drive) & it works great.
We were told to purchase the Maxtor OneTouch III 400 gig drive. It was working great until the aforementioned 7.1 software issue. Bob, are you saying that the LaCie is the only drive currently supported? That would be disappointing after buying the Maxtor.
Just a heads up with the firewire drives... if you're running v7.1, you won't be able to format the firewire drive. Something is busted with the software. From what I've heard from Sony, it should be fixed for 7.2 Also, make sure your drive is supported by Sony.
Sony says there are only one or two drives that will properly work with the MVS A/G. If you try to use a drive that's no supported, it probably won't work (at least reliably). RE

I know that we (just yesterday) ordered a firewire drive just for this purpose. Last time I loaded from the internal hard drive, about 500 stills took the better part of 90 minutes. I think the drive we bought couldn't have been more than $125, and I'd be happy to get the specs if anyone is interested. I remember reading a while back that Bob Ennis handles his Wheel and Jeopardy FMs this way, too.

I load about 800 in HD from Hdrive takes ohh a long time. Maybe 2 hours? I just walk away and get food. Been trying to get a external firewire drive.

Unfortunately we are still at ver 5.42... 700 HD in 10 minutes...that seems pretty quick... So when you save to the ext drive...it saves the thumbnails as well? This way when you load from the external drive, they get loaded along w/ them, saving the lag time when a setup has been loaded. THat is pretty cool if that is the case thanks Curt

If you have an 8000A or 8000G and have V6 or above you can also put a firewire hard drive directly on the processor itself. I've loaded about 700 HD stills in about 10 minutes. Not too bad RE

Ah....since we mostly do all file loads...that include the setup...this explains why the light stays on. So each time a setup is loaded, the thumbnail cache is cleared, and "refreshed" based on what is in the framestores currently. If the switcher frame has been rebooted, then there is nothing to refresh since there isn't anything currently loaded. Makes sense. I mostly only do show loads w/ the all file...it must not happen w/ effect only loads as I thought. So I guess the only way to speed this up is to minimize the frame memories loaded at any given time. thank you Allan and Rick Curt

So each time the switcher loads...it has to cache the thumbnails? interesting...that would explain while after a reboot the light isnt as bad...since after rebooting the frame you don't have any frame memories. but...why would this happen if the switcher frame hasn't been rebooted? the thumbnails should already be cached no.. I guess I could see if it is after a clear before load.. yes we do have quite a few...about 120 upstairs on the 8000...have to look and see how many we have on the 8000A. I would guess atleast that much. thanks Curt

It's normal. From what I've seen, it does it because the switcher is processing the FM thumbnails. As soon as all the thumbnails show up, the light goes out. Our 8k does the same thing because we have 80+ stills loaded at all times that we never delete or load over. Do you guys have a lot of stills that live in the FM database at all times?
