Hi all,

I just picked up an ESPN 360 college basketball show and was curious as to what to expect. is it just the basic espn look for replays, efx, score bug? Do they like a clean feed? any extras such as a tele?

Do they use a full size truck for these or is it a SAT/PROD combo?

Any info would be helpful

Thanks!

Michael Nice

I did not see any during hoops, but ESPN360 is internet only. I do not know if Bristol or Charlotte is the crewing and creative side of these. They are smaller shows but they are fun to do. You cover a game. (if that makes sense.) If asked again, I would say yes in a heartbeat.

With ESPN picking up the SEC this year there will inevitably be more of these 360 games and U games than ever. That said, the last post on this thread was in October...Did anyone have any other experiences with 360 games through the rest of the football and basketball seasons last year that can expand on those shows? Do all 360 shows air on the internet only? Are they all as basic as the ones above? Would you say that these are good shows to get in to the ESPN family?

GVG 3000, no clean record however the house asked for camera cut ME clean. Producer said OK, EIC just patched that for them. NCAA replay got dirty program. House also got a feed of two camera I think. Not a bad day. Oh, of the effects that I clipped, we probably only used two, excluding replay, open off and capper. We had no promos, so I didn't clip the promo wipe. Having data for the bug made life much easier considering the play clock camera was getting wet due to the rain and didn't always work.

Sound pretty easy. Was there a clean feed? What switcher?

Did the game today. Call time six hours before air, four cams + a beauty, one tape op, one EVS. We had two VTRs and a 2in/2 out EVS, no $$ reel, spots came from Ascent Media. (Not sure if that happens all the time.) I was asked to clip off maybe eight DDR transitions, including replay on/off and the open banner off. Cams shot warm up shots, EVS built tease. Voiced it live as we went on air. We did not control the red hat, radio did. We went to break when they did. We had a score bug and data. built the backup and didn't need it. Halftime we put the beauty up with score, did nothing until 2 minutes left on clock. We never did put talent on air, had stuff just in case. (Due to bad weather our beauty was in the booth, easy to make it a booth cam.) At the end we tap danced for about 40 seconds and then roll out with various lower 1/3 graphics. WARNING, there is an ESPN 360 ender at the end of the roll out. Score has to be taken out. We found out the hard way. We also did a taped "hit' for some use, not sure who? ESPN? ESPN 360? No melt fed. Transmission was clear about 10 minutes after game ended. The bug said ESPN, replay and capper said ESPNU. A bit of mix and match on the elements. We didn't have to brand replays. Overall a nice day except for the rain. Good day to be in the truck and not on an exposed camera.

I just picked up a 360 football game as well. I worked tape for a basketball game last year, and it looked pretty basic. Considering the truck we were on, "basic" was all you were going to get.

Oops, should have mentioned the game I did last year was men's college hoops, not football. For the hoops game camera ops had to be on 15 minutes before the game, did a taped open and rolled that and we were hot the entire time even when we had the wide shot with graphics during halftime. The producer/director (one man band) we had was a guy I had worked with before and he was mellow and wasn't trying to make the show something it wasn't. I agree, not a bad way to make a day rate.

A tape op around here told me that on the 360 show he did, they just did 4 high cams; the 25s, 50 and endzone. Not a bad way to make a day rate.

I think we should start doing that for all the halftime shows. " Back in 10" and the Pre-Game Shows could be a countdown timer to when the game starts. Just wishful thinking I guess.

I did one last November, not sure how they have changed. Last year we did a flash to replay, using a branded logo. No tele, rather basic show since the show was on the internet only. We did have a score bug, no DDR that I remember. The show was basic because the producer/director said that on some shows they do use a combo production/satellite truck, sometimes they use a full size truck. We didn't even do much during half time, just a wide shot with a graphic saying we would return in 15 minutes. I hope things haven't changed, I just picked up a college football game for them. It is a four camera show. Not sure yet where we are putting out cameras. Can't reinvent football coverage with only four cameras.
