I was watching "CNBC Reports" this evening and had a couple of questions regarding the live boxes and variations...

(I assume that CNBC is still using the Sony 8Ks)...

i) The 5 box comp (had 3 anchors on top, 2 panelists on bottom frame) is this being done entirely on the switcher?
Or, is this comp box being build on another switcher and routed to the on air control room/switcher?

ii) If it is being done entirely on one panel, are you using key resizers for the 5 box (they were static, no moves) and then
use the DMEs for the offset and side X side split boxes? (the offsets had some rotation applied)

iii) Are your panels equipped with both the 4 internal and 4 external DMEs or just the 4 internal?

(The majority of tranisitions between the various box looks was by an animation... I assume an FM clip)

I'm new to the Sony 8000G, so I'm just trying to broaden my thinking

Sean, On second thought, I'm pretty sure you're right. I think it is the Excel. If I remember, they have it labeled "XCL" or something like that on the switcher. I've come across the Excel (at CNBC), I think I've seen the Extreme, and I even ran into a Pinnacle Aladdin about a year ago on a truck. That was a fun one. Never really worked on Pinnacle DVE's enough to figure out their logic.

I use the DVExtreme in a news setting and it really is a nice box. I found it fairly intuitive. As mentioned, having a built in still store is handy. We have a 3 ch box (I kinda think CNBC has a DVExcel, the next generation if its that many channels) and I can do triple boxes with the frames coming off the internal still store and send the moving background through the DVE as well. No need to burn ME/keyers. My only real complaint is that I'm on, I think, the 4th keyboard/shotbox.

I have used the Extreme at several corporate facilities and I could see why they went with it. The one place used an early Deko that was networked to the DVE. They were able to build stills and push them to us.

I didn't spend a lot of time at CNBC but when I was there, I could never figure that thing out. Then again, I never asked anyone to show me.

Allan, I know nothing of CNBC-- But... The DVExtreme was a box Mike, Mary and I used in San Diego. And, yes you can load "stills" with alphas into the box and have the "effect" call up the "still". it's a great little machine, once you learn how to use it-- though it is a tad s l o w. Scotty

Rob or Lordo, if you see this thread, I don't mean to hijack it :-) CNBC uses an original 8k. They have 8 internal DME channels (no resizers). In addition, they have a 12 channel external DVE (a Pinnacle DVE Extreme I believe). I think the DVE Extreme can store stills and all (frames for various sets of box's). So they composite everything in the external DVE and take the source full in the switcher (it's kinda like having a 5th M/E).
