Rumor has it that our station is getting rid of the 8000a installed just over two years ago because it's not HD capable. They're going with Kahuna.

You can imagine my reaction when I heard this, but - am I missing something here? Is there a software key or something that enables any sort of 720p capability or is this all bull?

The only thing I can think of is that the Kahuna supposedly doesn't need up/down converters on any source. Maybe that's their logic - buy a new switcher that doesn't care what you put into it rather than spend money upconverting every non-HD source. I guess if we had a "G" then that wouldn't be as much of an issue.

Guess I'd better head over to the Snell forum and get a manual.

Strange to think that they might have bought an 8000A without considering the imminent upgrade to HD, or at least having terminology and a plan written into the purchase contract for that upgrade. Was the purchase of the Snell driven by a corporate deal, or is it just your facility?

Can the current sync generator do HD? 720p? On the original 8000 you could buy either SD or HD input and output cards, not sure if the 8000a was sold the same way. If they only bought SD cards, it might cost more to change the cards then trade a box in and buy a new switcher.

I didn't think it was possible to cripple that capability. However if it is possible then it sure could be the case and maybe the cost for enabling it is indeed the issue. How would I know if its crippled? I was able to select 720p on menu 7313 a few months ago during a pow-wow on the issue.

Your station may have PURCHASED it with the HD capability disabled, for cost reasons, but all they'd have to do it pay the money to turn on the HD capabilities. What station is it?
